Greg Cooley Wines is one of the Clare Valley’s smallest, more boutique wine producers. A family owned and operated business run by winemaker Greg Cooley and his partner Kelli Shanahan, wines are designed with food, family and friends in mind and like Greg, have an unerring knack for delighting and surprising their audience.
Greg’s wines are a little special, a little different and are by choice not available in bottle shops. A boutique producer, rather wines are sold direct only via the website or at their ever popular wine lunch series.
In 2002 they released their very first wine and since then the range has grown significantly both in style and appeal, to include reds, whites, sparkling wines and fortifieds.
But perhaps the best way to sum up their wines is to say that while they do make a lot of wines, they don’t make a lot of wine! Total production is around 2,500 cases a year and for some wines, as little as 100 dozen are made.
The focus is on the key Clare varieties of Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet and many of their wines are a mix of reserve or blended wines of each of these varieties. But you’ll always find something different in the range such as an oaked Chardonnay, Sparkling Shiraz, Sangiovese, Grenache or Pinot Grigio. Across the board they are easy drinking wines, approachable in youth, but delightful with age.
Rated 4.5 stars in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion, each of Greg’s wines is named after people who’ve been of influence to him over the years and their influence is as varied as the wine styles – from South Australian author Monica McInerney to his greyhound vet Graham Beh!
Presently, they are in an exciting phase of planning and development for a new Cellar Door and Winery upgrade at their Watervale premises, previously owned by winemaker Stephen John. They hope to be open for business in Easter 2021 and look forward to showing you their wines and of course around the new property.
“We hope you can find some space in the cellar for a few of our Cooley Wines and look forward to welcoming you at our new Cellar Door in the near future. Thanks for supporting small winemakers!” Cheers, Greg and Kelli, Greg Cooley Wines.

How can we stay in touch? Support family owned wineries and buy direct!
We hope you, your family and friends remain safe during these crazy strange times. The situation regarding Coronavirus has evolved ever so quickly these last few months and we like many other businesses have been monitoring events as they unfold to take into consideration our future events program. It is now more than ever we need to work together as a community and shop local, support small businesses and follow restrictions, so that we can all survive the long-term health and economic impacts of this scourge.
Keep an eye out to see when our annual wine lunch series can resume under COVID 19 restrictions. Sadly, we’re missing hosting you all and can’t wait to share a drink and a laugh over lunch with you, when restrictions are lifted. But that’s no reason to be a stranger. You can still order wines and support us virtually by contacting either Greg or Kelli t firstname.lastname@example.org or on mobile 0421 055 799 (for Kelli) or 0419 683 303 (for Greg). A full list of available wines can be accessed on our ORDER WINE page. But remember, our wines are sold direct only and as such they’re not available in bottle shops!
